What is UAC?

User Account Control or UAC in short is a feature when enabled treats all the administrators as the regular users of the system. This is enabled by default in systems with Windows Vista and Windows 7. This feature enhances the security breaches of your system and hence is very useful in maintaining a secure system. However it has some disadvantages as follows:

  • When You open some executable files it says you need administrative privileges to access it.
  • Could not save some files since the access is denied.

So sometimes You may need to disable the UAC for your convenience. I have given two simple and easy ways below.

Step 1: Using msconfig or System Configuration Utility

  1. Open msconfig by either typing msconfig in run or by searching for msconfig.
  2. Go to Tools tab on the top right.
  3. You will see a list of Tool names and their Descriptions.
  4. Select Disable UAC.Disabling User Account Control
  5. Then Click on Launch button.
  6. You will see the command prompt popping up with the message: The Operation completed successfully.
  7. Then close the command prompt window and click ok in the system configuration.
  8. To Enable UAC repeat the above steps with the command Enable UAC.
  9.

Step 2: Using Account Profile

  1. Click Start Button
  2. Click on the image at the top right, the one encircled in the below image.Windows Vista start menu
  3. A Window appears pointing to your user account.
  4. Click on the Turn User Account Control on or off link.UAC link in profile
  5. Uncheck the Check Box in the newly popped up window and Click OK.Turn on or Off UAC
  6. For Enabling UAC Recheck the Check Box.

The above are the two simplest ways to Enable or Disable UAC on you system. However these are not the only ways. You can perform this operation using several ways. Further a total system reboot is required in the second step while nothing of that sort is needed in the first. So the first step is advisable to follow.

Whenever UAC is turned off on your system a Security control button pops up on your Taskbar. On clicking the balloon you will be taken to a Security control window where you can turn on UAC with ease.
